QUESTION Dear HR Community, We implemented the following measures to reduce the possibility of retrenchment. 1. Requiring all employees to take eight days of annual leave (AL) during April and May. 2. Creating a shorter work week from June. 3. Making it mandatory for employees to consume two days of AL in a month on the days that they were not working. Are there any other cost-saving measures that you have planned or put into action in your company to prevent retrenchment? We are in the retail sector. QUESTION Hi HR friends, We have put staff on unpaid leave and paid them 50% of their wages previously. Now, unfortunately, we need to implement more extreme measures like redundancy and retrenchment. Are we allowed to take these steps? And if so, can we do it via a telephone or conference call followed by an email letter? I have done this before COVID-19 but I am hoping to find a more humane option. Any inputs will be most appreciated. Thanks! Eve   REPLY   Hi Eve, There isn’t any law against retrenchment during a furlough. However, MOM wants to see that alternatives have been provided for and that retrenchment has been conducted responsibly. During these times,  a web conference call can be considered a legal way to communicate your news. And more can be done when the lockdown is over. Best, Gabi
