Recruiting A Specific Race

QUESTION

Dear HR professionals,

What would you do if the hiring manager in your company is always requesting for a certain race during hiring? I am in charge of doing recruitment in the company.

Find out the reason for hiring a specific race. The reason could be: If that environment is Chinese speaking for example if a minority ethnic joins the company he or she might feel left out.

For us is because of China customers. If the reason is personal, encourage the hiring manager to practice meritocracy and share TAFEP guidelines.

Educate your manager on fair employment act and do mention that you need to maintain parity in terms of not having the same race of people in the team. This should be a part of diversity and culture handbook.

Request for a reply in writing, the justification for this requirement. State that you need to ensure the company's recruitment process falls within MOM's fair employment practices and guiding principles. Inform the Manager that you will refer to the justification(s) he/she provided, to TAFEP for their advice and clearance.
