Retrenching during furlough
Hi HR friends,
We have put staff on unpaid leave and paid them 50% of their wages previously.
Now, unfortunately, we need to implement more extreme measures like redundancy and retrenchment.
Are we allowed to take these steps?
And if so, can we do it via a telephone or conference call followed by an email letter?
I have done this before COVID-19 but I am hoping to find a more humane option.
Any inputs will be most appreciated.
There isn't any law against retrenchment during a furlough.
However, MOM wants to see that alternatives have been provided for and that retrenchment has been conducted responsibly.
During these times, a web conference call can be considered a legal way to communicate your news.
And more can be done when the lockdown is over.
